A world-class showcase of the South African livestock industry and its value chains awaits visitors to the fifth Agri-Expo Livestock from Thursday 11 to Saturday 13 October 2018 at Sandringham outside Stellenbosch.
A first at Livestock is the SA Holstein National Championships during which visitors can expect to see top class animals from all over the country inside the ring.
Biggest of its kind
Agri-Expo Livestock has over the past four years established itself as the most prestigious livestock event in the country, hosting the biggest dairy show in South Africa, as well as the biggest beef interbreed championships of its kind, with the crowning of the FNB Dairy Queen and BKB Red Meat King or Queen on Saturday 13 October as its highlight.
Andrew Masterson from the Eastern Cape made history by winning both championships last year. Masterson describes this as a huge honour, firstly as the standard is very high at Livestock, and secondly because of the exposure to the biggest crowd of visitors he has ever seen at a cattle show.
Focus on education
Livestock’s popular free milk goat and beef cattle information days, supported by the Western Cape Department of Agriculture and Standard Bank, includes interesting speakers such as Llewellyn Angus and Dr Faffa Malan.
Around 2 500 primary and high school learners, from schools as far as Kleinmond, annually visit the expo for a free schools’ programme, supported by the Western Cape Department of Agriculture. The programme includes eleven interactive stations where learners can experience cows being milked; get up close with different animals; and learn more about agricultural careers.
The programme also includes the Old Mutual Insure Regional Youth Show, the Landbouweekblad Challenge for handlers and carers, the Western Cape Boerboel Show, the Cape Rabbit Club’s Spring Show, sheepdog auctions and a variety of other activities. As part of the Groot Plaasproe, various stalls will sell farm food, wine and craft beer. The Broers and other popular artists will perform on Saturday 13 October. Livestock takes place daily from 08:00 to 18:00. Tickets are available from Computicket and at the gate. For more information, contact Agri-Expo on 021-975 4440 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
