If you and your family love animals and farm life, you should not miss the Groot Plaasproe on Saturday 14 October 2017 at Agri-Expo Livestock on Sandringham outside Stellenbosch. Primary school children can attend the expo free of charge to experience farm life and meet more than 300 animals!

This popular expo, held for the fourth year, once again includes activities such as working sheep dog demonstration (12:00 to 13:00), sheep shearing (every hour from 10:00 to 13:00) and dog jumping and flyball competition (13:15 to 18:00). Children, even the ones who do not have a pet at home, can participate in the Townies fun show (11:00 to 12:00) to lead a milk goat around the arena. Kids can ride ponies, visit a touch farm and meet miniature horses and donkeys. The programme also include Boeresport (11:00 to 13:00) and the Big Ice-cream Eating Competition (13:15) for participants of all ages.

Come and discover the difference between alpacas and lamas and see how different animals’ wool is spun. Rabbit lovers can enter their pet rabbits for the Cape Rabbit Club’s pet bunny show at 10:30. Have a go at judging by voting for the cutest animal in the Big Favourite Competition or stand a chance to win a prize by posing with any animal for the Big Selfie Competition.

For the adults there is live music by popular Afrikaans singers Adam Tas, Nic Stevens (one of  “Die Broers”) and  Die Wildberries. An array of artisan products such as wine, cheese, sosaties, roosterkoek, steak, yogurt and ice cream will be available for tasting and sale at stalls. Try out unique combinations such as boergoat meat and craft beer next to the braai, jaffles, skaapstertjies, wildspotjie, tripe “potjie”, gin, biltong and droëwors, freshly baked farm bread, milktart, “skaapkop” (smiley), pap with smoor, milkshake and much more. Big prizes are up for grabs in the Big Braai Competition (11:00 to 13:00) for solo or team braaiers, for which you may bring your own meat or buy meat from a stall.

According to Johan Ehlers, Chief Executive Officer of Agri-Expo, the expo creates an important platform for the public and especially youth to reconnect with agriculture. “More than 2  000  primary and secondary school learners, from as far as from Kleinmond, will visit the expo for a free schools programme supported by the Western Cape department of agriculture. The programme includes eleven interactive stations where learners can see how cows are being milked, how animals are washed before being shown in the ring and learn more about agricultural career opportunities. Education regarding the agricultural industry is important for our youth, as they are the next generation who will inherit the responsibility to look after and further develop this industry,” says Ehlers.
