Agri-Expo Livestock – A world-class showcase of the livestock industry
Biggest of its kindLivestock hosts the biggest dairy show in South Africa, as well as the biggest beef interbreed championships of its kind, with the crowning of the FNB Dairy Queen and BKB Red Meat King or Queen on Saturday 10 October 2020 as its highlight. Livestock is especially sought after for its dairy interbreed show, supported by the three largest dairy breeds, the Holstein, Ayrshire and Jersey breeders' societies. The well-known breeder Andrew Masterson of the Eastern Cape says Livestock is the "best marketing opportunity for the industry with first-class facilities and a sky high standard where you can measure yourself against the best".
Focus on educationSmall as well as commercial farmers can obtain free advice from experts during Livestock’s popular information days, supported by the Western Cape Department of Agriculture and Standard Bank. Anyone interested in goat farming can attend the Goat Information Day on Thursday 8 October 2020, whilst the Beef Cattle Information Day takes place on Friday 9 October 2020. Pre-register for free attendance Around 3 000 primary and high school learners annually visit the expo for a free agricultural educational programme, supported by the Western Cape Department of Agriculture. The programme includes eleven interactive stations where learners can experience cows being milked; get up close with different animals; and learn more about agricultural careers through the WCDoA’s Connect Agri exhibition. Educational fun for the whole familyEnjoy a day on the farm, watch cows being milked with the latest milking equipment in the Milk Shed, see animals being washed and prepared in the Wash Area before their parade in the show ring or create unique photo opportunities with animals like Percherons, Alpacas, different cattle breeds, sheep, etc in the Animal Lane.
The Display Arena hosts various activities such as the annual SA Working Sheepdog Auction, the Western Cape Arabian Horse Show, dog shows and the Old Mutual Insure Regional Youth Show. The Conference Centre hosts conferences and special events, as well as the Information Days and the ARC National Dairy Performers’ Awards.The programme also includes the Western Cape Dairy Goat Championships, the Landbouweekblad Grooms' Challenge, the Cape Rabbit Club’s Spring Show and a variety of other activities. Various stalls will sell farm food, wine and craft beer as part of the Groot Plaasproe. The weekend entertainment programme also includes braai competitions and performances by popular artists and line dancers.
